[ The challenge ]

Small businesses and individuals in Uganda juggle multiple mobile money wallets and bank accounts, lose money to high transfer fees, and have no reliable record of business cash flow — making it hard to plan, reconcile, or access credit.

[ Our solution ]

We built Mwino, a mobile-first fintech wallet that unifies MTN MoMo, Airtel Money and bank transfers in a single app. Low-cost transfers, instant merchant payments, and automated bookkeeping give individuals and SMEs one clear view of their money.

[ How we built it ]

From problem to launch, step by step.

01

Discovery

Interviewed traders, boda riders, and shop owners to map how money actually moves day-to-day across wallets and cash.

02

Wallet Core

Built the ledger and transfer engine in Node.js with a Flutter app focused on speed on low-end devices.

03

Integrations

Connected MTN MoMo, Airtel Money and bank rails, with QR merchant payments and instant settlement.

04

Compliance & Launch

Added KYC, biometric security and fraud controls, then rolled out with merchant onboarding across Kampala.

[ What we shipped ]

The core features.

Unified MTN MoMo, Airtel Money & bank wallets
Low-cost peer-to-peer transfers
QR merchant payments and instant settlement
Automated bookkeeping and cash-flow ledgers
USSD fallback for offline transactions
Biometric login and fraud monitoring
Business and personal accounts in one app
[ The impact ]

Mwino cut everyday transfer costs dramatically and gave thousands of small businesses their first clear, reconciled view of cash flow — laying the groundwork for credit access.

“Before Mwino I had three apps and a notebook. Now I take payments, send money and see my whole shop’s cash in one place — and I keep more of it.”
